Before having Charlotte, I was in full on nesting mode! It started really early on when I was in my first trimester, and I decided that we were going to clean out every single room and closet in the house. The clutter was starting to get to me, and I figured that it would only get worse once we brought everything that a baby needs into the house. I’m really glad that we were able to take on this large project before having her, because it’s not something that would be easy to do with having a newborn! One of the areas that I was most excited to tackle was our master closet. I wanted to get rid of a lot of clothes and donate them to Goodwill and sell what I could to a local consignment store. I also wanted to have a better organization system for everything that I decided to keep. Here are some tips that I have for cleaning out your closet:
1. Try everything on
This can be time consuming, but it’s important to try everything on to make sure that it still fits and that you still like the way that it looks. If anything is too big or too small, there isn’t a need to hold onto it anymore. You also want to ask yourself if you have worn it recently? Will you wear it again in the future?
2. Create piles
Create piles of clothing for what you plan on keeping, donating, selling, and throwing away. Everything that you plan on keeping will be hung back up in the closet, everything that is going to be donated can be brought to your favorite local donation location and is still in decent shape, everything that will be sold can be brought to your local consignment store and is in excellent shape and is a desired brand, and then everything that is going to be thrown away is no longer in good shape (stained, torn, etc).
3. Use velvet hangers
One thing that I did was I changed out all of the hangers in my closet to the no-slip velvet hangers. This forced me to examine everything that I planned on keeping for the second time, and it helped me eliminate even more clothing from my closet. I also really love the cohesive look of having all matching hangers.
